The Dracula orchid is one of many rare and threatened species that the SavingSpecies project is protecting from extinction.
Science-based conservation. That’s one way in which SavingSpecies sets itself apart from other conservation organizations. It’s also how we help ensure that our precious donations are going to have the impact the donors want and expect.
But science research costs money, and since all our donations go just to buying land on behalf of local people, we generally have to support the essential research with our own personal funds. So you can imagine that we are delighted to announce that we have received our first grant specifically to support science research!
The prestigious Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, an international foundation based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates has kindly awarded SavingSpecies $5,000 to support conservation research. We’ll use the money to inventory species in our conservation area at La Mesenia, near Medellin, Colombia. It’s a place dripping with life, and yet biologically unexplored.
The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund grant will help SavingSpecies scientists catalog the amazing species richness in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. And just in time, too, since the area is under increasing pressure from loggers and developers. By cataloging the life there and, with luck, finding species new to science, SavingSpecies hopes to encourage donors to support our efforts to conserve this very special part of our planet.
