What: Call of Life, a movie about biodiversity and the sixth mass extinction
When: Thursday, May 22, 2014 (times vary)
Where: Cable TV networks (channels vary)
This Thursday, May 22, 2014 is International Day for Biological Diversity. As part of our annual reflection of biodiversity’s importance and the threats faced by life on Earth, Stuart Pimm and the SavingSpecies team invite you to join us in viewing a stirring documentary about global extinction. The film is Call of Life, to be aired on Free Speech TV, a few times this Thursday, May 22nd (click here to see a schedule). To learn where to find Free Speech TV, click here.
With colleagues and concerned activists, Stuart Pimm participated in Call of Life. It was produced by the Species Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the extinction crisis, and released in 2010 to great acclaim. It won film achievement awards including the Reel Earth Environmental Film Festival’s Best Science Communication Film award.
Stuart Pimm is particularly happy to introduce this film on its first-ever broadcast on television. This broadcast also shows an additional 15 minute interview with Dr. Pimm in which he discusses some of things we can do to prevent the calamity presented in the film. The film does not pull punches. It describes the perilous state of Earth’s biodiversity in raw detail.
As supporters of SavingSpecies, you are of course aware of grave threats to biodiversity and the film paints a bleak picture. But, as Dr. Pimm says in the film’s introduction, “The future of life on earth is not yet written. We can make a difference and we can change our path.”
We do that at SavingSpecies every day. We find degraded land and use it to reconnect isolated forest fragments with native trees and plants, creating wildlife corridors. These vital routes give endangered species a chance to expand their populations and ultimately to thrive.
So please remember to watch Call of Life this Thursday, and share the word. Also never give up hope for the future of nature. With SavingSpecies, you are helping us to heal the planet. You are making a difference.
