Q. Where are the lands you wish to purchase?
Typically in tropical countries. Such countries have the greatest number of species at risk of extinction. Rainforests hold the greatest number of species, but other habitats, including tropical dry forests are in great danger.
Q. Might a donor be able to simple purchase the land — and then agree to conserve it?
This is a very difficult question and it
varies greatly from country to country. For some countries,
the answer is clearly “yes”. Generally, we’re looking for ways
of passing the management to local organizations, national
parks, etc.
Q. Who would manage the land?
We look for projects where local authorities
— such as the equivalent of the US National Park Service —
would agree to manage the land. And we will continue to
monitor the land through satellite observations as well as
expecting the organizations who handle the purchases to
continue their work.
Q. Who rates SavingSpecies.org?
We stand by the reputations of the advisors
who form our collective, their research, and what they
accomplish. Our decisions are open and transparent, for we
require detailed justifications for our recommendations.
Q. Aren’t you simply eliminating the middleman for conservation actions?
Yes. Plus
we’re bringing a huge collective experience to the decisions.
We know where to act and why and we know we must act now.
Q. Not to be unpleasant, but aren’t you selling indulgences to rich, polluting Americans and Europeans who ought to pollute less in any case?
Yes,
and yes. We all ought to pollute less. But if we wait another
half century to reduce our carbon dioxide pollution to
sustainable levels, we’ll lose a third or more of all life on
Earth. Let’s save species now before it’s too late.
